Loco no. 49

Gordon Highlander locomotive,
North British Railway Company T.1966.15.c

The Gordon Highlander was used in the northeast of Scotland, stopping at stations along the coastal route, including Portsoy, Buckie and Elgin.

I think that the Gordon Highlander went through Glasgow Central Low level during an excursion during the early 1960s. I heard it was taking passengers to Kelvinhall Station for an exhibition.

The Gordon Highlander and the Caledonian 123 were a sight to see when they were still running around Glasgow.

Question by Glasgow Museums

Do you think it would be a special treat to work on the Gordon Highlander? Or even to travel on her?

Eyewitness by David Sweeney, former loco fireman

I was a fireman on the Gordon Highlander a few times in the early 1960s. But mainly the older men were given the jobs. It was a special treat to be able to work on the old locos.

Eyewitness by Ian Teaz

I remember seeing the Gordon Highlander at the Dawsholm shed in the early 1960s. It was an open day, the Highland 103 and Caledonian 123 locomotives were there too. They were steaming, but for some reason there were no trips that day.
