Glen Douglas Loco

Glen Douglas Loco

Glen Douglas locomotive North British Railway Company T.1966.15.b

The Glen Douglas locomotive ran up and down the West Highland line, from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig, through high mountain passes, desolate moors and wild glens.

Comment by Ian Teaz

It’s a lovely loco. I saw it over at Bo’ness at the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. I heard it is coming back to the Museum of Transport.

I never worked on the Glen Douglas but saw it on occasions. Like the other locomotives that had been restored, she was a real sight.

Question by Glasgow Museums

Can you see the appeal of trainspotting? Do you remember being in a train pulled by a "namer"?

Eyewitness by Dugald Cameron

I liked going to school. That is, I liked the train journey there and back from Yoker High to Charing Cross every day. It was pulled by a “namer’, often a “Glen” or “Director” 4-4-0. Glen Dessary, Glen Moidart and, I am sure, Glen Douglas.

The train I used, accompanied by my mother at first, was the 0822 Dalmuir to High Street. I now think that my mum might have been something of an enthusiast for she knew all the names and commented to me on them.
