When we went on holiday my dad used to carry all the travel documents in a brown flight bag – I saw the same bag in a vintage shop recently, which made me feel very old!

Flight bags are used by airline crew to carry documents and personal effects, such as a change of clothes, as they jet around the world. They feature the airline logos and have become very fashionable.

I remember the first plane I was on, I was going to Benidorm, that would be in the early 70s. It was a wee bit turbulent coming back, going back in. They actually had a whip round for the pilot!...In those days the planes weren't like what they were today.. .they were old, they were quite old. But again, the excitement was just such it didn't make any difference.

Did you envy the cabin crew their smart flight bags? Have you ever bought new luggage for a particular journey?

Eyewitness by Maxwell James

The whole thing was absolutely excitement from start to finish. Most people had never been in an airport until the package holidays came up … it was awe-inspiring to go into this place that was so alien to you, and you could see through the windows all the planes coming in.
