“Travelling on QE2 was an unforgettable honour and pleasure.”

Nelson Mandela, from "QE2: Forty Years Famous" by Carol Thatcher

Comment from a QE2 Press Release

She has sailed more than 5.3 million nautical miles - that's more than any ship in history and is equivalent to travelling to the moon and back over 11 times. She has carried nearly three million passengers. ..QE2 can sail backwards faster than most cruise ships can sail forwards and one gallon of fuel moves her 49.5 feet! She has made 795 Atlantic crossings and completed 23 full World Voyages. ..

I served my apprenticeship in John Browns during the building of Queen Elizabeth 2, but alas I wasn't at her launch. At that time I was a member of the Territiorial Army in Dumbarton. On the day of the launch, we did the Guard of Honour for Her Majesty, lining each side the road as her car came off the Erskine ferry. After she passed by we all jumped back into the trucks to get back to the drill hall to see the launch on TV. But I was back at work the next day building the engines for her. It was a pleasure a few years ago to sail on Queen Elizabeth 2 as Staff Chief Engineer

Questions by Glasgow Museums

Have you ever sailed on the QE2? Or do you remember seeing her in Glasgow?

For six glorious days, you are suspended in time…wrapped in a cocoon of steel, teak, luxurious accoutrements, good food and fine service.

Finally, the throaty whistles sounded, the Queen…joined her successor of sorts, the far bigger and taller Queen Mary 2…Then with roaring whistle exchanges the two great liners departed together – QE2 in the lead…both ships glowed much like diamonds against the deep purple skies of twilight…
