Model of Glen Sannox, 1892 John Brown and Co T.1962.6.b

Glen Sannox ferried passengers from the railway terminal at Ardrossan to Arran in the early 20th century.

I remember coming back from Arran a couple of years ago, and watching 4 jet-skiers following the ferry. They were playing on its wake and bouncing all over the place! Everyone was on deck watching them jump and show-off. I think they stayed with the boat all the way back to Ardrossan! You wouldn’t have got that in the days of the Glen Sannox.

I loved sailing over to Arran for our summer holidays. We got the train from Glasgow, the ferry to Arran, then the bus from Brodick. As a young child it seemed like a long journey.

It was the highlight of my sons' holiday, to travel on a steamer. They would run from one side of the boat to the other…We always went up on deck. When we went on holiday we took our wellies and jackets. We went out on deck rain, hail or shine.

Do you still have holidays in Scotland? Or just daytrips?

Rose at an unearthly hour, 5.30 am, and then we got train from St Enoch 8.10 am to Androssan and Glen Sannox to Arran. We met all the Croziers at St. Enoch. And we filled a compartment. Scorching hot day … Loafed about Arran … Having a great time.
