Sir Thomas Price Model

Model of Sir Thomas Price, 1925 Lobnitz and Company T.1961.28.a

The Sir Thomas Price was a dredger used in South Africa. Using a chain of buckets, she scooped sand, clay and mud from East London’s harbour.

I wonder what impact not dredging the Clyde has had over the last couple of decades. Would it be physically possible for a ship like the QE2 to be brought up the river today?

I photographed the Sospan Dau dredging the lower Clyde last summer. Dredging’s certainly not a thing of the past!

Questions by Glasgow Museums

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve seen floating in the Clyde? Do you fancy swimming in there?

Eyewitness from The Scotsman, December 1928

They [Lobnitz & Co] had sent similar vessels to Singapore, South Africa, Bermuda, Japan and South America.

I worked on the docks in Cape Town. Often during our lunch break we used to watch the dredgers working in the harbour, picking up the mud, throwing it onto a barge and taking it out to sea.
